Krachtig ritueel voor slachtoffers van seksueel geweld.
Elegy gaat over geweld tegen vrouwen en LHBTI’ers en de onaangename realiteit van de verkrachtingscultuur en seksueel geweld in Zuid-Afrika en de rest van de wereld. Ook in Nederland is er geregeld seksueel geweld tegen kwetsbare groepen. Elegy is een krachtig rouwritueel waarin zeven zangeressen een enkele, heldere, hoge noot vasthouden elkaars zang in een doorgaande loop opvolgen en het publiek in een trance brengen. Regisseur Gabrielle Goliath toont het geweld niet maar benadrukt de individualiteit van elk slachtoffer. Zij gebruikt de klassieke klaagzang om traumatische herinneringen deelbaar te maken. Ze won in Zuid-Afrika o.a. de Future Generation Special Prize en de Standard Bank Young artist Award met haar werk.

Powerful ritual for victims of sexual violence.
Elegy speaks of violence against women and the LGBTI community and the uncomfortable reality of the culture of rape and sexual violence in South Africa and around the world. In the Netherlands there is also regular sexual violence against vulnerable groups. Gabrielle Goliath’s Elegy is a powerful commemoration for victims of sexual violence in which different female performers follow each other in a loop holding a single, clear, high note and bringing the audience into trance. Gabrielle Goliath doesn’t show the violence but emphasizes the individuality of each victim. She uses the traditional lament to make traumatic memories shareable. In South Africa, she recently won the Future Generation Special Prize and the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for her work.
