WHAT ISH GENDER? Is the first in a series of events by ISH and Compagnietheater about topics that matter to us. Creative, inspiring and sometimes provocative.
Some (unfortunately most) people know two gender types: ‘men’ and ‘women’. Your sex dictates your sexuality, identity and behaviour. And that’s that. But more and more people are starting to protest against this narrow minded way of viewing gender. How important is gender for who you are and how others see you?
With WHAT ISH GENDER? ISH brings a range of artists, thinkers and performers together in an eclectic festival. Dance, music, art and clubbing come together and form an informative, powerful and cheerful plea against gender labelling.
House of Vineyard met “We Are the Future & The Future is Fluid”
Our very own Ballroom house, House of Vineyard, will fill the evening with voguing dance, fashion and realness. You cannot miss this. About the birth of LGBTQ Ballroom culture: participants are often a member of a ‘house’, like House of Dupree, House of Ninja of House of Omni. These houses would come together in ballrooms to battle-dance against each other. Houses would do anything to impress the jury and challenge each other. This resulted in spectacular performances with extravagant dancing and fashionable costumes. These evenings were called ‘Balls’ and participant where mostly members of the LGBTQ community with African-American or Latin roots.

Lose yourself in the beats and be surprised by the acts of the Amazing Agency. This Amsterdam branch represents people who are autonomic and not influenced by the norm.
Guillermo Blinker – GIMOTION
In his live loopstation performance, artist GIMOTION samples his voice into a soulful, rhythmn driven soundscape and dances with his words on top. Words becoming; spoken word poetry, songs, rap verses and even dance movement. He creates an intimate space where he shares stories about his personal journey of becoming. A space where less is more and where you will feel like dancing.

How does our inner world take shape? And how does the outside world influence this. What makes us an individual? With these questions Sarada Sarita dives into patterns of structure in human lives. She shines a light on the labels we give ourselves, others and the world around us. A special act, made for WHAT ISH GENDER?
Sarita grew up in a dance and theatre family and started to participate in school plays and talent shows from a very young age. After graduating from Lucia Marthas dance academy in 2018, she was asked by Lucia Marthas to choreograph different tv-performances. She was also granted several scholarships (Monster of America, Orlando USA, Pulse Convention, New York) and took dance lessons at the “Millennium Dance Complex” in Los Angeles and choreography lessons from Gill Dulduao, who directed and choreographed Janet Jackson.

With the video The Wardens (2016), Thissen investigates the notion of toxic masculinity. This notion refers to constructed Western ideas that characterize the male gender role as dominant, lacking in emotion and aggressive, and is considered one of the ways in which patriarchal thinking is harming men. By focusing on a gesture that is seen as typically masculine, and turning it into a battle of endurance, he draws attention to the absurdity of this reality.
Thissen is an artist and gender activist. His work questions (gender) identity and our contemporary achievement culture. He examines gender roles in society and the influence of social expectations on our behavior, and tells stories about performance, representation and failure. Julius is supported by the Mondriaan Fund in 2017/2018.
In her new film ‘iObject: RiHannah’ (2016-‘18) Suzanne Posthumus explores a digital world in which the female body doesn’t only fall prey to the ‘male gaze’ but also to a new, more democratized gaze in which women create, use and even exploit their own image.
“As a participant of this culture, I am often the perpetrator and the victim of my online use / abuse. And instead of proudly announcing my objection with the exclamation ‘I Object’, I carelessly suffer my fate as a product of the Apple era: an ‘iObject’ “.
Suzanne Posthumus (1987) is a Dutch artist, living and working in London. She studied photography at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and received her MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University of London in 2014. In her work she is driven by a strong commitment to the world in which we live. Recurring topics in her practice are techno-feminism, spiritualism and post-humanism. ‘Frame or be framed’ is a deep-rooted motif that runs through Puck Verkade‘s (1987) video-based practice as an inquiry into the complexities of representation. How do these complexities inform gendered and racialized biases in everyday interpersonal encounters? How are they mediated and visualised in order to perpetuate social inequalities?
BREEDER (episode 1) is part of the BREEDER trilogy (2017). The work looks into how social control informs the framing of our lives, the stories that instruct our bodies and construct our identities. Reproductive responsibility, and the inevitable choices that come with it, is a form of social control – one that is obviously sexed but also specifically deeply gendered, racialised and classed.
After receiving her BFA from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Puck Verkade has shown her work at various institutions, such as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam. She recently completed an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London.
Bisschops (1984) is a freelance curator and art critic, and is the curatorial assistant time-based media at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. As a curator and writer she has a special interest in expanding and critiquing existing narratives in the art world, and opening the doors of art to lesser-known or new voices. Her essays on intersectional feminism in internet-based art were published in i.a. Orlando Magazine and Oogst. Her exhibition ‘Doing Gender’ is part of a series of exhibitions and performances that deal with identity and embodiment in the 21st century. Bisschops studied psychology and art history.
