Exhibition: Speak Truth to Power

Ingrid Masondo is curator bij IZIKO South African National Gallery in Kaapstad. Zij richt zich op de onzichtbare geschiedenissen, verhalen die niet zijn verteld en de vastlegging in beelden. Uit het IZIKO netwerk selecteert zij Afrikaanse kunstenaars die vragen stellen over identiteit, etniciteit, gender en identificatie en die bestaande beelden over de geschiedenis ontleden.

Cathal McKee presenteert grafisch werk en illustraties van jonge actuele kunstenaars uit Afrika en de Afro-Nederlandse diaspora. Hij reflecteert aan schoonheid die in waarheid verscholen zit. ‘De instagramversie van de waarheid die media en influencers posten en delen domineert vaak onze kijk op de wereld. Vinden we de waarheid belangrijk of scrollen we er voorbij? Veel kunstenaars en ontwerpers willen hun waarheid delen, onjuiste verhalen uit het verleden opnieuw vertellen of verbeelden.

Deze tentoonstelling is onderdeel van Afro_Vibes festival en is dagelijks gratis te bezoeken in het Compagnietheater op 3, 4, en 5 oktober tussen 18:00 en 00:00.

Ingrid Masondo is curator at IZIKO South African National Gallery in Cape Town. She focuses on the invisible histories, stories that were never told and the recording in images. From the IZIKO network she selects African artists who ask questions about identity, ethnicity, gender and identification and who dissect existing images about history.

Cathal McKee presents graphic work and illustrations by young contemporary artists from Africa and the Afro-Dutch diaspora. He reflects on beauty hidden in truth. “The instagram version of the truth that media and influencers post and share often dominates our view of the world. Do we find the truth important or do we scroll past it? Many artists and designers want to share their truth, tell or re-imagine incorrect stories from the past.

This exhibition is part of Afro_Vibes festival and can be visited free of charge in Compagnietheater on 3, 4, and 5 October between 18:00 and 00:00.
